Getting from London to St Andrews with golf clubs
You can travel from London to St Andrews by train with golf clubs. LNER operates services from London King’s Cross that stop at Leuchars, five miles from St Andrews, on their route to Dundee and Aberdeen — and golf clubs in a soft travel cover can be taken onboard if you can carry them unaided. For groups, hard-shell cases, or anyone flying into Edinburgh, a private transfer to St Andrews costs between £110 and £160 and handles the luggage without conditions.
THE DIRECT TRAIN: LNER TO LEUCHARS
LNER runs services from London King’s Cross to Leuchars on their route north to Dundee and Aberdeen. Leuchars station is five miles from St Andrews town centre. LNER operates approximately four direct services per day from Edinburgh Waverley to Dundee on weekdays, and all four stop at Leuchars. Check the current timetable at lner.co.uk for weekend services and seasonal variations.
LNER’s luggage policy sets a maximum bag size of 90 x 70 x 30cm and requires passengers to manage their luggage without staff assistance. Golf clubs are not explicitly banned. In practice, a compact soft travel cover has a reasonable chance of travelling without challenge; a wheeled hard-shell case is more likely to cause a problem, particularly on a busy service where rack space is limited. If you have any doubt, LNER offers their Luggage Buddy courier service via Sherpr, which ships golf clubs from your home to your St Andrews accommodation from around £22.
THE LUMO + SCOTRAIL ROUTE
Lumo operates the cheapest London–Edinburgh fares on the East Coast Main Line. However, Lumo explicitly bans golf clubs onboard — their published policy states that travel will be denied if you are carrying them. Lumo does not serve Leuchars.
If you want to use Lumo for the London–Edinburgh leg, ship your clubs separately using their LumoLuggage door-to-door courier service. From Edinburgh Waverley, ScotRail runs regular services to Leuchars, giving you the onward connection to St Andrews once clubs have been delivered to your accommodation independently
WHAT THE POLICIES ACTUALLY SAY
Operator Golf clubs Notes
- Lumo Not allowed Explicit written policy — boarding refused
- LNER No explicit ban Max bag 90x70x30cm, must carry unaided. Soft case more likely to pass than hard-shell
- ScotRail No explicit ban National Rail conditions apply — manageable without assistance is the key test
Both Lumo and LNER offer separate luggage courier services for clubs if you prefer not to risk onboard restrictions.
FROM LEUCHARS TO ST ANDREWS
Leuchars station is approximately five miles north of St Andrews. Local taxis cover the journey in around 15 minutes.
Stagecoach also runs the 99 bus service between Leuchars, St Andrews, and Dundee. Ordinary bags and suitcases are generally accepted, but luggage is at the driver’s discretion. A golf travel case may be fine if it is compact and manageable, but it is not guaranteed. If you are relying on the bus, board with the bag clearly packed, keep it clear of the aisle, and ask the driver before loading if it looks bulky.
For a tight connection from a London train, or for hard-shell cases and multiple bags, a local taxi is the more reliable option.
WHEN A PRIVATE TRANSFER MAKES MORE SENSE
Groups of three or more with multiple bags, anyone with a hard-shell travel case, and anyone arriving at Edinburgh Airport rather than travelling by train will find a private transfer more straightforward than managing connections and luggage across two or three services.
Edinburgh Airport has no direct rail link to St Andrews. A private transfer from Edinburgh Airport or Edinburgh Waverley to St Andrews costs between £110 and £160 depending on operator, vehicle, and group size. The driver loads directly — there is no size limit, no overhead rack, and no staff discretion to navigate.
For four golfers arriving at Edinburgh Airport with four bags and four hard-shell cases, a single minibus transfer booked through GetMeATaxi is simpler, and often cheaper per head, than four separate train tickets plus taxis at the other end.
GetMeATaxi sends your journey details to licensed local St Andrews operators and returns competitive quotes within two hours. Include your group size, number of golf bags, and whether you are travelling with hard-shell cases — operators will quote for the right vehicle from the start.
